Redecorating a teen room?
Hi, My friend and I are going to redecorate her room this summer and were hoping for some tips Firstly, do we paint first? or find the bedspread?? and what about the carpet, its a very ugly green, where can we find some cheap carpet to just lay over the top, or a rug? she is 16 sooo she may want to change her room around in a few years so we dont want anything permanant, also which colors make a very small room look bigger? and what are the best types of storage containors to stack up under a bed or something, her older sister just moved out of their room and she still has tons of stuff she is storing there that is just in the closet, Any tips would really help and ideas would be great, also we dont have a HUGE budget, but maybe 250 total, so chap suggestions or money savng ones as well, Thanks - loliipop

first i would choose the bedspread, and get an idea of colour.(if you have to take the spread with you to the paint shop. then paint. gloss first, then walls(its easy to wipe emulsion off gloss, it isnt easy the other way round)
carpet next, sea grass is really nice and fairly cheap

Paint first so you don’t have to worry about getting paint on anything important. For carpet, check with local floor shops. Sometimes they have remnants that aren’t expensive and would make a nice rug. Pastel co lours make a room look bigger. Paint the ceiling the same co lour as the walls. Check your local Walmart or other department stores for under the bed tote boxes.

First of all, plan everything on paper first and figure out your budget BEFORE you do anything. Look at the size of the room and use this as a guide to decorating. If the room is smaller than average, stay away from colors that are too dark as they will make the room look even smaller. Look through some decorating magazines to get an idea of what style of things you like. Make a journal with the pictures in it. Sit down and look at the colors, fabrics, furniture and accessories used to obtain the desired look. Now you are ready to choose your colors. Pick three colors and use these as the basis for decorating firstly the walls, floor, furniture and accessories. Keep the most vibrant color as an accent color for your accessories. This keeps you from being “trapped” by a particular color or pattern. If you don’t know how to play with color, stay away from too much pattern unless you put in on an accent piece of furniture, comforter or pillows, make it something that can easily be removed or changed if you so desire. NOW, you are ready to shop. Happy decorating

light colors will definitely make a room look bigger….check garage sales or thrift stores for furniture…a just off white ceiling won’t look as dirty as a white would…if you stick to light or pastel colors it will help give the room a bigger look. a solid bedspread in a color you love will look gr8 if you go nutz on pillows of different shapes and prints that match….walmart has very reasonable prices on rugs of different sizes….runners, big area rugs, or various sizes.iff you stay with solids and match your bedspread this to will help give a bigger appearance…Rubbermaid has gr8 stackable totes of all sizes which you can cover the tops with coordinating material or have fun painting, stenciling depending on your taste…painting should be done first to prevent messing up ur new room….you can even make a canopy with material, macrame, or beads….and potpourri liquid or in the pot and candles always give a relaxing aura….check out some magazines and improve to suit urself!!!also stenciling on the walls can be fun you can do it on the pillows too!

Teenagers like bold colors, but if you use bold colors they usually make a small room even smaller. So here is an easy way to make the room feel bigger AND still let you use some bold colors:
Pick a wall where the window is (if there is one), paint it with white or light blue (cloud, sky, blue). This will ‘open up the horizon’, ‘expand the view’, and make the room feel a little bigger. Then you are free to pick a bold color for other walls in the room.
For low budget decorating, use a “decozee” trick of mine called ‘reverse inspiration’: just buy whatever you can afford and feel good to you. After you are done putting all the decor pieces together (rug, bedspread, etc) then shop for a painting that contain all the major color elements of the decor pieces, this will ‘tie’ all the stuff together as if the entire room is inspired by the color palette of the painting.

first paint your room i advice you to use light colors and not bold ones you can use light blue the color of the sky or you can use light violet like the color of the lilac these make the room much bigger.
then you have to change that ugly green carpet and use not a light one coz they get dirt very fast so get one dark that has got nearly the same color of the room but the dark of it.
about her sister’s stuff she can throw away what she doesn’t want and she can keep what is very valuable for her and she can use them to decorate her room by it instead of buying new things and if still there is something from her sister she can try to put it under the bed .
you can make another closet but a small one above the old one as a storage closet if the old one doesn’t reach the ceiling yet.

change the carpet to a neutral and put a rug on top.
Ross is the best store for discounted stuff or Tuesday Morning or TJ Maxx

Paint is very important and also easy to change. It can set the whole tone of the room. Overstock.com has lots of modern things like rugs, lamps, etc. and the best part is that you can order large things cheaply because there is very little shipping charges. Also there are really cool wall murals on-line.

Right the 1st thing you do is Paint! Choose a nice pastel colour, Then if you like add shapes or stipes, but definitely dont paint the stripes down if the room is small! Then get that green carpet and take it up, If the floors are good underneath sand & then farnish them, If not buy a wooden affect lino. The room should be starting to look big now! Now you can buy the duvet cover, you can get duvet covers with curtains and tie backs to match, all in the 1 pack very cheap! Then pick up a nice light shade to match. Now for the storage you can use boxes, even shoe boxes with the lids, Paper them, jazz them up add gliter ect., These can be stored under the bed. Also a few shelves would look very nice too. Im sure all this will be well withen your budget and with the money you have over you can buy a few extras a small rug and a nice picture to finish all of it off! Good Luck!

First thing you should do is decide what kind of colors or feeling you want in the room. Start looking around to see what kinds of things she likes. I would choose the bedspread first, because it’s much easier to match paint to things than to match things to paint because there’s so much variety in paint. I would suggest a bedspread in a solid color, and then using patterns and other colors in the sheets and throw pillows, because those things are cheaper and therefore easier to change than the bedspread. Don’t use deep, dark colors on the walls if you want the room to look bigger – use light colors. If you want something bright and cheerful, go with a pale yellow. If you want it to feel calm, use a very light brown/taupe or a pale blue. White can be a nice background if you use a lot of color in the rest of the room, and you won’t have to worry too much about it matching anything she changes in the next few years. You can buy decals for the wall, or find a cool stencil (look for simple shapes or things that don’t look too “stencil-y” and old-fashioned) to add in another brighter color. For the floor, check out Ikea (rugs are under “Textiles” online), because they have fairly large rugs for cheap - $20-$50, and if you need them bigger, think about sewing a few of them together. You can also see if there’s any place near you that sells off carpet remnants – these are the ends of rolls that they just need to get rid of and are a lot cheaper than normal, and you can just use it like a big rug. For storage, get boxes that go under the bed. You might have to get these things that raise your bed off the floor a little bit for them to fit well, but they’re pretty good. You can also check out The Container Store and California Closets (they sell this brand at Target) for more storage ideas. Good luck!

I love pbteen.com for ideas - springboard from those and learn how to sew or no-sew some accessories. I like the idea of finding the things you love and then looking for good substitutes. Good luck.

pick a bright nuetral color that she can grow up with and then pick out spread
as far as carpet goes why not rip it up and clean the floor and lay a rug
best storage containers are the stackable ones

This is what my niece did. We went to Ikea so that she could get some ideas. It turned out that she fell in love with a display they had for a girl’s room. All red french toile with round black bedside tables, red comforter, striped red curtains, lots of black accents in the grouping of art over the bed, etc. The TV was placed on top of an off white TV table with doors. We ended up painting her room a very soft silvery gray. She bought the bedding and curtains, bookshelves and tables from Ikea. She already had lots of black and white photos and prints - which we framed in coordinating black and silver frames. She loves her room. I think she spent about 325.00 on everything, including paint supplies (100 of that was for a nice all weather comforter). Good luck.

You can first pick out different types of paint. Then test each one on the wall.Pick out the one that she likes best. You can also paint over the paint you put on there already. It will cover it up don’t worry! Then this is the time to go out and pick out the accessories for the room. For instances “My room is a Chinese theme so i picked out some things that went with that theme like big fans and things authentic looking”. So base the room on some kinda theme and chose some things that go with the room. One thing that looks great in all rooms are nets. Mine has glow in the dark stars on it. Well good luck on what your looking for!

There’s a couple of good shows on HGTV called Design on a Dime, Decorating Cents, Divine Design. Why don’t you watch a couple of these first and see how they take the room from start to finish. I know it helped me when I built my first deck to have a video to refer to. Check out your home centers for remnant carpet with pad attached it’s easier to just loose lay it if you like. Use bold colors as accents because a little goes a long way. You can always change it if you don’t like it. Have a good time!
